Aircraft carriers are among “the most sophisticated military equipment” in this age because of their capabilities. The book presents a comprehensive history and analysis of the aircraft carrier and the Fresnel Lens Optical Landing System (FLOLS). It compares landing systems used in most aircraft carriers from the 20th century. The future of the aircraft landing systems also forms the basis of the book to compare different carrier technologies and evaluate the types of aircraft carriers, their development and future expectations in relation to technological changes.

This book represents the compilation of several research approaches on opera tional freight carrier planning carried out at the Chair of Logistics, University of Bremen. It took nearly three years from the first ideas to the final version, now in your hands. During this time, several persons helped me all the time to keep on going and to re-start when I got stuck in a dead end or when I could not see the wood for the trees. I am deeply indebted to them for their encouragement and comments. Prof. Dr. Herbert Kopfer, holder of the Chair of Logistics, introduced me into the field of operational transport planning. He motivated and supervised me. Furthermore, he supported me constantly and allowed me to be as free as possible in my research and encouraged me to be as creative as necessary. In addition, I have to thank Prof. Dr. Hans-Dietrich Haasis, Prof. Dr. Martin G. Mohrle and Prof. Dr. Thorsten Poddig. On behalf of all my colleagues, who supported me in numerous ways, I have to say thank you to Prof. Dr. Dirk C. Mattfeld, Prof. Dr. Christian Bierwirth, Henner Gratz, Prof. Dr. Elmar Erkens, Nadja Shigo and Katrin Dorow. They all helped me even with my most obscure and dubious problems. My family supported me all the time. They always showed me their trust and encouraged me continuously. Special thanks are dedicated to my parents Monika and Heinz-Jiirgen.

This volume of the Keio University International Symposia for Life Sciences and Medicine contains the proceedings of the 13th symposium held under the sponsorship of the Keio University Medical Science Fund. The fund was est- lished by the generous donation of the late Dr. Mitsunada Sakaguchi. The Keio University International Symposia for Life Sciences and Medicine constitute one of the core activities sponsored by the fund,of which the objective is to contribute to the international community by developing human resources, promoting scienti?c knowledge, and encouraging mutual exchange. Each year, the Committee of the International Symposia for Life Sciences and Medicine selects the most signi?cant symposium topics from applications received from the Keio medical community. The publication of the proce- ings is intended to publicize and distribute the information arising from the lively discussions of the most exciting and current issues presented during the symposium. On behalf of the Committee, I am most grateful to the late Dr. Sakaguchi, who made the series of symposia possible. We are also grateful to the prominent speakers for their contribution to this volume. In addition, we would like to acknowledge the ef?cient organizational work performed by the members of the program committee and the staff of the fund. Naoki Aikawa, M. D. , D. M. Sc. , F. A. C. S.

The Navy's Carrier Battle Groups (CBG) have traditionally supported the national defense strategy by providing overseas presence and a crisis response capability. This report discusses the policy, operational, and force structure aspects of CBG and provides possible alternatives for meeting national security requirements with fewer carriers. The Navy plans to reduce the force to 12 active carriers and an aviation training carrier by the end of FY 1995. The Navy intends to replace its conventional carriers with nuclear carriers on a one to one basis to maintain a 12 active carrier force.

In 2008, the Fed. Motor Carrier Safety Admin. (FMCSA) reports that there were about 300 fatalities from bus crashes in the U.S. Although bus crashes are relatively rare, they are particularly deadly since many individuals may be involved. FMCSA tries to identify unsafe motor coach carriers and take them off the road. This report determines: (1) the number of motor coach carriers registered with FMCSA as new entrants in FY 2007 and 2008 that are substantially related to or in essence the same carriers the agency previously ordered out of service; and (2) what tools FMCSA uses to identify reincarnated carriers. The report analyzed FMCSA data to find matches on key fields (e.g., ownership, phone numbers, etc.). Charts and tables.
