New York dancing master Hillgrove acknowledges that he has "availed himself of all the books from which he might elicit any valuable information." Indeed, very little of the manual is original. Divided into six parts, Hillgrove discusses the benefits of dance, dress, deportment and etiquette in the ballroom and the supper room. The second part focuses on bows and courtesies, positions of the feet, and provides exercises for the feet and legs. The third and fourth parts discuss the quadrille and provide many figures. The fifth part is devoted to round dances such as the waltz, polka, schottisch, galop, and polka mazurka. The last section focuses on more quadrille figures and other group dances such as the "Virginia Reel," "Money Musk," and College Hornpipe.

* Lucid and accessible style makes the series appealing to the general reader * Liberally illustrated throughout with stills from the film under discussion. * Collaboration between Cork University Press and the Film Institute of Ireland. Between the premiere of Brian Friel's stage play "Dancing at Lughnasa" in 1990 and Pat O'Connor's cinematic adaptation in 1998, Ireland experienced seismic economic and social changes, as well as "Riverdance", "Angela's Ashes" and an international vogue for all things Irish. Set in 1936, "Dancing at Lughnasa", as both film and play, imagines an anachronistic past in which the loss of joyous communal ritual is symptomatic of the cultural malaise so often associated with Ireland in the 1930s. Drawing upon unpublished material from the Friel archive at the National Library of Ireland, Joan FitzPatrick Dean contrasts the expressly theatrical elements of Friel's play and their cinematic counterparts

This book is a typical example of mid-nineteenth-century anti-dance literature. Crane takes the position that the ancients, including the Greeks and Egyptians, danced only for religious purposes. The author additionally notes that dancing in the Bible was done by "maidens and women alone." Also typical of this type of literature, the author decries the religious ceremonies of the "savage and the semi-civilized" world of non-Christians, especially the customs of non-Europeans. Crane concludes that balls have a bad effect on health and are a waste of time.

I am here. You will never be alone. We are dancing for you. So begins Cutcha Risling Baldys deeply personal account of the revitalization of the womens coming-of-age ceremony for the Hoopa Valley Tribe. At the end of the twentieth century, the tribes Flower Dance had not been fully practiced for decades. The women of the tribe, recognizing the critical importance of thetradition, undertook its revitalization using the memories of elders and medicine women and details found in museum archives, anthropological records, and oral histories. Deeply rooted in Indigenous knowledge, Risling Baldy brings us the voices of people transformed byculturalrevitalization, including the accounts of young women who have participated in the Flower Dance. Using a framework of Native feminisms, she locates this revival within a broad context of decolonizing praxis and considers how this renaissance ofwomens coming-of-ageceremonies confounds ethnographic depictions of Native women; challenges anthropological theories about menstruation, gender, and coming-of-age; and addresses gender inequality and gender violence within Native communities.
