Defending Complexity

by Eleanor Heartney, Defending Complexity Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Defending Complexity books, One of the most damning charges that can be leveled against artists, curators and critics these days is that they are "reducing art to politics." The idea has taken hold that politics is like a virus, sucking all the aesthetic sophistication, beauty and formal intelligence out of an art work, and leaving behind only an empty husk of tired propaganda. This book looks at art and politics from a variety of standpoints, among them, the failures and successes of art committed to social change, the intersections between art and religion, globalism and economics, the dangers posed by paranoia and censorship to our vision of free expression and the new urgency of these issues in a post 9/11 world.

Complexity And Control In Team Sports

by Felix Lebed, Complexity And Control In Team Sports Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Complexity And Control In Team Sports books, Regional development strategies are becoming more similar all around Europe, even though regional differences are more pronounced than ever and many European regions have become more autonomous actors. This thesis of a peculiar standardized diversification of sub-national space in the modern European Union is the point of departure of this book. Based upon the analytical premises of Stanford School Sociological Institutionalism, Sebastian M. B├╝ttner studies regional mobilization in contemporary Europe from a new and innovative perspective. He highlights the importance of scientific expertise and global scientific models in contemporary regional development practice, and exemplifies their significance with the example of region-building in Poland in the course of EU integration. This new wave of regional mobilization is not just conceived as an effect of local, national or European politics, but as an expression of a larger conceptual shift in governing society and space. This well researched and clearly argued book not only provides fresh insights into region-building and regionalization in contemporary European space, but also contributes to the new sociology of Europeanization. It will be an illuminating read for scholars and students in Sociology, European and EU studies, International Relations, Cultural Studies, Geography, Regional Science, Polish Studies and related subject areas.

Law In A Complex State

by Neville Harris, Law In A Complex State Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Law In A Complex State books, Approximately half of the total UK population are in receipt of one or more welfare benefits, giving rise to the largest single area of government expenditure. The law and structures of social security are highly complex, made more so by constant adjustments as government pursues its often conflicting economic, political and social policy objectives. This complexity is highly problematic. It contributes to errors in decision-making and to increased administrative costs and is seen as disempowering for citizens, thereby weakening enjoyment of a key social right. Current and previous administrations have committed to simplifying the benefits system. It is a specific objective of the Welfare Reform Act 2012, which provides for the introduction of Universal Credit in place of diverse benefits. However, it is unclear whether the reformed system will be either less complex legally or more accessible for citizens. This book seeks to explain how and why complexity in the modern welfare system has grown; to identify the different ways in which legal and associated administrative arrangements are classifiable as 'complex'; to discuss the effects of complexity on the system's administration and its wider implications for rights and the citizen-state relationship; and to consider the role that law can play in the simplification of schemes of welfare. While primarily focused on the UK welfare system it also provides analysis of relevant policies and experience in various other states.

Whigs And Liberals

by John Wyon Burrow, Whigs And Liberals Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Whigs And Liberals books, This study of English political thought in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries is organized around the concept of a Whig tradition. Professor Burrow argues that the study of nineteenth-century liberal thought has taken insufficient account of its eighteenth-century antecedents. The work ofmodern scholars on eighteenth-century themes, especially the civic humanist tradition and the Scottish Enlightenment, is drawn on as a preamble to considering the central ideas of Liberalism. The book traces how the concept changed between the early eighteenth and the late nineteenth century, andexamines the main points of continuity, analogy, and difference in the progress of society, public opinion, individuality, and the idea of balance. A concluding chapter looks at the early twentieth century.
