Digital Information and Knowledge Management examines how academic librarians can use knowledge management to provide an increasing amount of electronic information to an expanding user base. Several of the country’s leading library administrators analyze these vital issues from the perspectives of both information providers and library users, exploring the challenges of selecting and managing electronic information and resources, making the most of knowledge management, and improving digital access to their users. Electronic resources have given the library new roles to fill and created a demand for librarians skilled in the acquisition, retrieval, and dissemination of digital information. Libraries and librarians have met the challenges presented by digital resources and have moved from building collections of print materials into the growing field of knowledge management. Digital Information and Knowledge Management offers insights into how librarians are making that transition to enhance the resources and services they can offer library users. Topics examined in Digital Information and Knowledge Management include: cooperative collection development the balance of print and electronic resources the evolution of digital resources in libraries the concept of knowledge management changes in research libraries knowledge management in academic libraries factors that influence the selection of electronic resources disseminating information about scholarly collections the need for a standardized method of information presentation successful approaches to managing digital information the digitalization of collections and historical materials how to maintain the connections between academic disciplines and libraries and much more! Digital Information and Knowledge Management is an essential professional resource for senior- and mid-level library administrators, and for acquisitions, reference, and collections librarians.

The case-based reasoning (CBR) and case-based design (CBD) have been around for some time and established themselves as one of the commonly used mechanisms of approximate reasoning in intelligent systems and de- sion support systems, in particular. In a nutshell, the CBR mechanisms o?er a powerful and general environment in which we generalize on a basis of - ready accumulated experience being represented in the form of a ?nite and relatively small collection of cases. Those cases constitute the essence of the existing domain knowledge. When encountering a new situation we invoke and eventually modify the already collected decision scenarios (cases) and arrive at the pertinent decision or a certain design alternative. Interestingly, uncertainty or granularity of resulting decision is inherently associated with the nature of the cases being used in the reasoning process and a way in which partial matching takes place between the historical ?ndings (cases) and a current evidence. Knowledge Management was the theme of the Standing Conference of Eastern, Central and Southern African Library and Information Associations (SCECSAL XVII) in 2006. This selection of conference papers provides a cross-disciplinary approach to knowledge, information and development and how the three together can mould a new and more informed society. The challenge is to make our libraries more people-centered and Afro-centric, not simply serving the interests of the elite and paying little attention to the plight of the less well off. This needs to change, with libraries becoming more inclusive and serving the needs of all. These papers raise provocative questions, and provide an insight into the struggle of information services in this part of Africa to be part of an emerging information and knowledge society.

This volume showcases contributions from internationally-known researchers in the field of information management. Most of the approaches presented here make use of fuzzy logic, introduced by L.A. Zadeh almost 50 years ago, which constitute a powerful tool to model and handle gradual concepts. What all of these contributions have in common is placing the user at the center of the information system, be it for helping him/her to query a data set, to handle imperfect information, or to discover useful knowledge from a massive collection of data. Researchers working in data and knowledge management will greatly benefit from this collection of up-to-date studies. This may be also an invaluable source of information for postgraduate students interested in advanced information management techniques.
