Про Голодомор 1932–1933 років в Україні публікацій уже не бракує. Однак ця книжка – унікальна. Писали її не історики, не архівісти, не публіцисти – її авторами були звичайні люди: селянин, учителька, студент, партієць… Свої нотатки вони робили не сподіваючись, що ті колись будуть опубліковані, що їх прочитають тисячі й тисячі людей. Вони не ставили перед собою цілі написати історії Голодомору, а лише фіксували побачене, почуте, прожите та пережите. Парадоксально, але ті записи вціліли донині завдяки радянським спецслужбам. Для чекістів вони були «вєщдоками» – речовими доказами, промовистими свідченнями «контрреволюційної діяльності» авторів. У конвертах при їхніх кримінальних справах і збереглися ці сім історій людей, записаних в режимі реального часу на тлі апокаліпсису – Голодомору, з усіма його «декораціями»-жахіттями. Герої в ті роки катастрофи проживають свої особисті історії – із найнесподіванішими сюжетними лініями й поворотами. І то такими, що не спали б на думку й найгеніальнішому драматургові. На сторінках цих щоденників, попри пекельно-смертельне лихоліття, коли їх писано, людське життя триває у всій повноті: з радістю від народження дітей і болем від утрати рідних, з коханням та інтригами, з прикладами небаченої жертовності та відразливої ницості.
