This introduction to the fascinating subject of black holes fills a significant gap in the literature which exists between popular, non-mathematical expositions and advanced textbooks at the research level. It is designed for advanced undergraduates and first year postgraduates as a useful stepping-stone to the advanced literature. The book provides an accessible introduction to the exact solutions of Einstein's vacuum field equations describing spherical and axisymmetric (rotating) black holes. The geometry and physical properties of these spacetimes are explored through the motion of particles and light. The use of different coordinate systems, maximal extensions and Penrose diagrams is explained. The association of the surface area of a black hole with its entropy is discussed and it is shown that with the introduction of quantum mechanics black holes cease to be black and can radiate. This result allows black holes to satisfy the laws of thermodynamics and thus be consistent with the rest of physics. In this new edition the problems in each chapter have been revised and solutions are provided. The text has been expanded to include new material on wormholes and clarify various other issues.

Black holes are a fascinating object predicted in general relativity, and are actually observed in Nature. Black holes create so strong gravitational fields that we can no longer ignore the existence of gravity even in smaller regions in space-time, which calls for the gravitational theory that works well at a smaller scale --- quantum gravity. While we have numerous candidates for quantum gravity by now, none of them is yet perfect in one way or another. In this thesis, two of the approaches to quantum gravity are investigated. Loop quantum gravity is a canonical approach to quantization of gravity, and successfully predicted the quantization of space-time geometry. However, its application to black hole thermodynamics poses a number of mysteries, including one about the surface area of a minimal black hole. Causal set theory puts primary emphasis on causality of space-time with a discretization condition, and it is currently the only discrete theory of space-time that does not break Lorentz symmetry. But it is hard to describe black holes in the theory. The primary goal of the first half of this dissertation is to provide the complete answer to the mystery about the minimal black hole surface area in loop quantum gravity, and of the second half is to propose a definition of black holes in causal set theory.
