by Amanda Craig, Hearts And Minds Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Hearts And Minds books, Rich or poor, five people, seemingly very different, find their lives in the capital connected in undreamed-of ways. There is Job, the illegal mini-cab driver whose wife in Zimbabwe no longer answers his letters; Ian, the idealistic supply teacher in exile from South Africa; Katie from New York, jilted and miserable as a dogsbody at a political magazine, and fifteen-year-old Anna, trafficked into sexual slavery. Polly Noble, an overworked human rights lawyer, knows better than most how easy it is to fall through the cracks into the abyss. Yet when her au pair, Iryna, disappears, Polly's own needs and beliefs drag her family into a world of danger, deceit and terror. Riveting, humane, engaging, HEARTS AND MINDS is a novel that is both entertaining and prepared to ask the most serious questions about the way we live.

Set against the background of the campaign for women to win the vote, this is a story of the ordinary people effecting extraordinary change. 1913: the last long summer before the war. The country is gripped by suffragette fever. These impassioned crusaders have their admirers; some agree with their aims if not their forceful methods, while others are aghast at the thought of giving any female a vote. Meanwhile, hundreds of women are stepping out on to the streets of Britain. They are the suffragists: non-militant campaigners for the vote, on an astonishing six-week protest march they call the Great Pilgrimage. Rich and poor, young and old, they defy convention, risking jobs, family relationships and even their lives to persuade the country to listen to them. Fresh and original, full of vivid detail and moments of high drama, Hearts and Minds is both funny and incredibly moving, important and wonderfully entertaining.

Campaigning For Hearts And Minds

by Ted Brader, Campaigning For Hearts And Minds Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Campaigning For Hearts And Minds books, It is common knowledge that televised political ads are meant to appeal to voters' emotions, yet little is known about how or if these tactics actually work. Ted Brader's innovative book is the first scientific study to examine the effects that these emotional appeals in political advertising have on voter decision-making. At the heart of this book are ingenious experiments, conducted by Brader during an election, with truly eye-opening results that upset conventional wisdom. They show, for example, that simply changing the music or imagery of ads while retaining the same text provokes completely different responses. He reveals that politically informed citizens are more easily manipulated by emotional appeals than less-involved citizens and that positive "enthusiasm ads" are in fact more polarizing than negative "fear ads." Black-and-white video images are ten times more likely to signal an appeal to fear or anger than one of enthusiasm or pride, and the emotional appeal triumphs over the logical appeal in nearly three-quarters of all political ads. Brader backs up these surprising findings with an unprecedented survey of emotional appeals in contemporary political campaigns. Politicians do set out to campaign for the hearts and minds of voters, and, for better or for worse, it is primarily through hearts that minds are won. Campaigning for Hearts and Minds will be indispensable for anyone wishing to understand how American politics is influenced by advertising today.

by Julian McAllister Groves, Hearts And Minds Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Hearts And Minds books, Living in a university town that is a center of biomedical research, Groves found he could not ignore the intense opposition to research using animals. He began to analyze the formation and activities of local protest groups, attending meetings and talking to activists about their beliefs. To his surprise, many activists emphasized rational and scientific justifications for their commitment to the movement. Conversely, scientists frequently discussed their use of lab animals in the context of their attachment to pets or other animals and their concern for the environment. Groves seeks to understand these positions in connection with popular beliefs about the place of emotions in public life. Hearts and Minds looks past the placards and sound-bites to people's intellectual and psychological explanations for their positions. It discards worn generalizations and offers a nuanced portrait of people who are seriously engaged in reconciling their ethics and their behavior.

Hearts And Minds

by Hannah Gurman, Hearts And Minds Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Hearts And Minds books, The first book of its kind, Hearts and Minds is a scathing response to the grand narrative of U.S. counterinsurgency, in which warfare is defined not by military might alone but by winning the "hearts and minds" of civilians. Dormant as a tactic since the days of the Vietnam War, in 2006 the U.S. Army drafted a new field manual heralding the resurrection of counterinsurgency as a primary military engagement strategy; counterinsurgency campaigns followed in Iraq and Afghanistan, despite the fact that counterinsurgency had utterly failed to account for the actual lived experiences of the people whose hearts and minds America had sought to win. Drawing on leading thinkers in the field and using key examples from Malaya, the Philippines, Vietnam, El Salvador, Iraq, and Afghanistan, Hearts and Minds brings a long-overdue focus on the many civilians caught up in these conflicts. Both urgent and timely, this important book challenges the idea of a neat divide between insurgents and the populations from which they emerge—and should be required reading for anyone engaged in the most important contemporary debates over U.S. military policy.

Winning Hearts And Minds

by Susan Lisa Carruthers, Winning Hearts And Minds Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Winning Hearts And Minds books, Over the fast twenty-five years, terrorism has attracted immense public and governmental interest. It is not, however, a new phenomenon. This study examines how post-war colonial insurgencies in Palestine, Malaya, Kenya and Cyprus were regarded by British policy-makers and the military as the 'terrorism' of their day. Using a great array of archive material, including mass-media sources, the author analyses the way in which propaganda formed an integral part of counter-insurgency strategy. Not only did British governments and their colonial officials produce their own publicity material on events in troubled colonies, they also sought to shape how the media - in Britain and elsewhere - reported them. Unlike many studies of colonial insurgency, this book examines both domestic and international aspects of the battle for 'hearts and minds'.
