Throughout history, women have participated in and sometimes initiated rebellions to defend the welfare of their family, community, class, race or ethnic group. This volume presents original research on women's activism in Asia, Europe, Australia and Latin America. It explores how women have advanced social change and their influence on, and response to, existing transformations in society. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the authors examine women's activities and conditions in diverse social and political contexts, from revolutionary societies, to status quo societies, to societies in decline. With its primary focus on agency and social change, this book deconstructs patriarchal discourses and unearths aspects of female agency in an array of cultural, historical and geopolitical contexts. Chapters on movements in China, Japan, Australia, Croatia, Russia and a range of other countries both contribute to our understanding of change in those societies and seek to locate women at the center of politically aware movements. Although not exclusively a book about feminist activism, this essential collection is motivated by the feminist desire to restore to history a range of women's experiences. This book introduces new ways of thinking across boundaries, identities and complexities in a still essentially patriarchal world. It will be of great interest to students and researchers in the fields of gender studies, activism and comparative politics.

"Traditional distinctions between the experiences of women and men are breaking down and being reconfigured in new, more complex ways. The long-established life expectancy gap between men and women appears to be closing in many affluent societies. Many men appear to be far more 'body and health conscious' than they ever were in the past and there are perceptible changes in women's 'health behaviours', such as increases in cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption.

The Economic Status of Women under Capitalism shows how institutional economics can be used to analyze the economic oppression of women and to promote progressive social and economic change. The book is divided into three parts. Part one, Exploring Connections: Institutionalism and Feminism, examines the relationship between institutionalist economics and feminist theory. Part two, Extending our Analysis, offers a critique of feminist and institutionalist theory and suggests ways to extend these approaches to be more inclusive and progressive. The final part, Examining the Issues of Gender assesses the economic status of women in several different countries - the United States, the former Soviet Union and Japan - providing a 'real-life' context for the theoretical issues raised in Parts One and Two.Working from a radical institutionalist perspective, the contributors to The Economic Status of Women under Capitalism share a concern over the economic status of women and a belief that the dominant approaches to economic analysis are limited in their ability to analyse the subordination of women and prescribe policy responses. This important book will be welcomed as a significant contribution in its own right as well as providing impetus for future debate.
